yeah right? This is the kinda of bad call that if it happened 6 years ago, everybody would have said "Football needs video review when the ref calls it horribly wrong"....then you read it that this call was reviewed by VAR and you realize that...football is just hopeless

red card? something is wrong with this modern football if that is a red card. VAR is a waste of time if you cannot call the player back, apologise and let him play as normal.

Not a red if it’s in the middle of the field. But being the last defender, that tackle stops a breakaway, hence the red. I get it, deff a soft red but that has to be the reasoning

@@Anthony-gz8lp if it were a foul then it would be a red but he completely gets the ball, he is in control of the challenge. He doesn’t lead with his studs and it isn’t over or through the ball. He barely touches the attacker. I have no idea what VAR saw to not overturn the decision.

Ampadu hit the ankle right before the ball (which he hit with his knee by the way) and you can see it clearly.

"Getting the ball first" is a metropolitan legend. It goes hand in hand with "shoulder push is never foul". Street football nonsense. Never mentioned in the Laws of the Game. It's Law 12. The FA calls it "excessive force" and the FIGC AIA calls it "vigoria sproporzionata" ("disproportionate vigor" or "excess of active strength"). It means that you're tackling way too hard and way too fast, but not only that, also in a way that could endanger the other player's safety. Getting the ball or not, it's irrelevant, and it has always been. And anyway, it's not even what happens here, since Ampadu does not hit the ball first. At best, he simultaneously brushes the ball and stomps Ribery's foot to the ground. What do you think it could happen to an ankle by dragging the point of the foot suddenly down to the pitch? You'll see what really happened if you play the video at min and stop it at 2:37. Ampadu does not even reach the ball first since it was in Ribery's possession, as you can see at 2:28. Ribery had only an open field in front of him before a clear scoring chance. The last defender treads on his foot and drags him down with excessive and endangering force. Red card. The old football was not that violent and when this mythical violence occurred then they had lots of red cards in a single match. Why do you think they set the rule "a match should not continue if there are fewer than seven players in either team"? Stop spreading nonsense about the rules of the game because you want the game to be more macho or whatever.
