That isn't the problem. The offside law has to start somewhere. If you move it people will say "he was only offside by his ankle" or then "he was only offside by his knee". Belotti was unlucky but he was still offside. You have to respect this rule of the game, otherwise there is no game.

@ParisianWeetabix If that's the case then why not implement a thick line offside rule a la Premier League? A player can only be deemed offside if he was ahead by a certain distance, more or less (indicated by an imaginary thick line). In the heat of the game, people can't control the smallest part of their body. How can Bellotti have known that his toe was offside? Even Arsene Wenger would agree with this. That's why he proposed a change to the rule. But I agree that we still have to respect the law, while the law haven't been changed. At the very least, there should be a discussion about this.

@wildansaladin8728 I respect Arsene Wenger but as far as I can see his proposal doesn't really make a difference. People will just say "oh well he was only 1cm ahead of the thick line, it isn't fair". It's impossible to have an offside rule without close decisions, and if you start making close decisions not-offside then you end up shifting the goalposts every time. I think the thick line just gets thicker and thicker. I agree it's annoying for Belotti and I agree the game would be better if we let goals like that stand. But the only way that can happen is if people in the game accept that sometimes we should let decisions slide in order to allow more beautiful goals. And I don't think that will happen because every manager and almost every fan cares more about winning than about beauty and the spirit of the game. So we have to have a clear rule with no subjective interpretation, and therefore there will always be beautiful goals that get ruled out by it. We can just hope VAR and the linesmen make decisions quickly and correctly. I'm happy to have the discussion but I really think there's no solution to that particular problem :/
