Dries Mertens scored a sublime hat-trick as Napoli thrashed Empoli at the Stadio San Paolo. Lorenzo Insigne opened the scoring before Mertens got his first of the night with a low strike from outside the box. Francesco Caputo did give Empoli hope on the hour mark to make it 2-1, but Mertens scored a beautiful goal to restore Napoli's two goal lead. Arkadiusz Milik and Mertens both then scored in stoppage time to wrap up the victory.

Mertens is my favourite player in Belgium and Napoli. He is not that decisive as Hazzard or Insigne. But is a very clever and objective player, a fantastic view of the game and the field. An authentic modern player.

Watching the last two Napoli matches, against Roma (although they didn't win that one, but nevertheless, they played amazing, had the ball in their possession almost 70%, created sooo many chances and had shots on goal, which they missed, mainly Insigne, who was missing on that match like never before - it could've easily be 5-1 that match too. But, games like that happen, and not every team is Rubentus, to get a present penalty by the ref, when they can't score regularly) and THIS one, I sure feel as if Napoli is just about starting to adapt to Ancelotti's style, and deprogramme the "Sarrifootball" technique (that's for Chelsea now, to learn to play it at their best - as they are doing, slowly but surely - Sarri's vertical tika-taka and play the most beautiful football in Europe). And from what I could see and come to a conclusion, Ancelotti kept the best things from Sarri style, but also brought diversity in the offense, and calmness in the overall game ( I won't even mention the players rotation and the fact that unlike having only 15 players tops, under Sarri, Ancelotti's actually using 20+ players. And let's NOT FORGET that Faouzi Ghoulam is still not playing. If he gets back to his form before the last year's injury, Napoli will again have THE BEST LEFT BACK in Italy, and ONE OF THE VERY BEST in the world, without a doubt)! I truly believe that unless we see the last season repeating (having another Rubentus-referees "baby" - crippling the opponents when the difference in points is one or two, with only a couple of rounds to the end), Scudetto could finally end up in Naples! The only thing... I'm NOT SURE what's happening with the audience this season. The average is 16+K less than last year! What's the reason for it?! It can't be (only) the bad stadium conditions, because they are the same for years, and that's only a reason why we don't see fully packed San Paolo (65K). But Napoli had 44 to 48K average attendance the previous 10 seasons on a regular basis! And this season, only 30K! Why's that? If there's a Neapolitan who knows this for real, and first hand, I'd really like to know!

@@salesposito5089 Although I believe that San Paolo is beyond maintenance (the only real one would be a complete demolition and building a new one, football only for 55K to 60K).. still, I don't get it! What does maintenance has to do with the attendance?! I mean, it's not like half the stadium is unavailable and that's why there's only 30k on each match (the way the official data tells us, it was only the Liverpool game, when the attendance was close to 40K)?

I guess that's why De Laurentiis has been saying lately that he's gonna build a new stadium, outside Naples, and it'll be a small one, for only 30K! If he really does that, I think it'll be terrible decision! First of all, that club belongs to the inhabitants of Naples, it's not just his own property to do whatever he feels like! I know that he's having huge problems with Naples authorities with the question about the stadium (they don't wanna sell him this one and let him rebuild it, nor they wanna give him another location for a new stadium, and this dispute has been going on for years now), just as they are having problems with him, 'cause I'm sure he's not the easiest and most honest person to negotiate something like that! However, if he really starts implementing that plan, I really believe that the whole city, millions of people should go out to protest! Leaving such a great and big multimillion town without their famous football club, and convert SSC Napoli into a suburbia team, would be a disaster! Second, no matter how modern and great that (possible and potential) new one would be, it's a terrible idea to have only 30K stadium, for a team like Napoli (that's not how a great club, from a huge city, behaves and should have such a small home). It means he's making it a provincial club for the rich only!
